La Ceiba is best known as the jumping-off point for the Bay Islands, but you don't have to get on a ferry to find good beach time — several great stretches of coastline are an easy drive from town.
Sambo Creek
A Garífuna fishing village east of La Ceiba with a laid-back, uncrowded beach and simple seafood restaurants right on the sand. Good for an easy half-day out.
Playa de Miami / Punta Sal area (near Tela)
About an hour west of La Ceiba, the beaches around Tela and the nearby Punta Sal / Jeanette Kawas National Park are some of the most scenic on the north coast, with calmer water than you might expect.
Corozal and Nueva Armenia
Quieter Garífuna communities along the coast road with wide, breezy beaches — a good pick if you want fewer crowds than the more visited spots.
Downtown La Ceiba's own beach areas
If you don't want to drive far, La Ceiba has its own beachfront near town, popular with locals on weekends — a convenient option if you're short on time between other plans.
Planning your beach day
- Bring cash — small beachside restaurants and vendors don't always take cards.
- Sun protection is essential; shade can be limited on some beaches.
- Ask locally about current conditions before swimming, as with any coastal destination.
Pack a cooler, grab a car from our fleet, and make a day of it — the coast road east and west of La Ceiba has more good beaches than you'll get through in one trip.
